In Community Leadership, our fundamental concepts are integrated throughout the program. Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned came from listening to the experiences of my classmates, hearing from guest speakers who are grassroots activists and organization founders, and by directly serving my community partners.
Our curriculum intentionally weaves racial justice into every lesson, rather than relegating such a crucial framework to a unit tacked on as an afterthought. We are trained to understand communities and organizations as complex structures, and to situate ourselves within those contexts as observers, facilitators, and partners. I am graduating with a set of tools to engage communities thoughtfully by identifying assets, clarifying goals, and sharing the skills I’ve mastered here.
The Community Leadership program at UMBC prepares practicing leaders with the skills and experience needed to generate transformative social change. Students develop greater self-understanding, engage with the assets and challenges of urban communities, hone practical leadership skills, and build personal and professional relationships that support their growth as leaders.
